Overcoming the complexity of perfused cadaveric simulation with a fully integrated ecosystem
Catherine Forest-Nault, April 9th 2026
Transitioning from outsourced services to internal capability
Perfused cadaveric simulation has long been seen as something complex to outsource rather than something centers could realistically deliver themselves. That is changing. More bioskills labs and simulation centers want to expand beyond conventional training formats and offer higher-fidelity experiences under their own roof, with their own teams. LifeEngine was built to make that possible by offering a fully integrated ecosystem that makes complex perfused simulation easy, repeatable and directly manageable by technical teams within bioskills labs and simulation centers.

Breaking the “Complexity Barrier”: The limits of improvised perfusion setups
Historically, many institutions have attempted bringing perfused cadaveric simulation in-house, only to see these initiatives abandoned due to the severe limitations of improvised, ad hoc setups. These setups often rely on a patchwork of repurposed pumps and standard operating room or mortuary equipment, creating friction points that can compromise both the anatomical model and the surgical workflow:
Rapid tissue swelling
Basic saline-based or simplified perfusion fluids used in many improvised setups tend to rapidly infiltrate cadaveric tissue, causing swelling that distorts the anatomy and shortens the usable lifespan of the model. While animal blood can help mitigate this issue, it also brings major operational drawbacks, including cost, storage and disposal constraints, and more demanding cleanup.
Messy fluid management
Fluid handling is a major limitation in improvised setups. Standard anatomy tables may support some drainage, but they are often not compatible with imaging workflows because they are not made of radiolucent material. As a result, many teams must choose between fluid management and imaging access, or resort to using operating room tables that were not designed for perfusion. This often leads to continuous spills, severe pooling, and significant OR contamination.
Operational instability and lack of standardized workflows
Many in-house perfusion setups are not streamlined enough to support consistent, repeatable operation. Instead, they require significant technical oversight at every stage of the session, including setup, circuit management, flow and pressure adjustments, troubleshooting, and cleanup. This constant need for manual intervention makes protocols difficult to standardize and each session harder to reproduce reliably. Air introduction, leaks, unstable pressures, and unrealistic flow conditions can quickly turn a promising simulation into a fragile and unpredictable setup.
Overcoming these barriers requires more than a better pump. It requires an integrated platform designed from the ground up to make perfused simulation practical, repeatable, and manageable in-house. At the core of that platform are dedicated perfusion systems that provide the hardware foundation for the broader LifeEngine ecosystem.
The hardware foundation: Standardizing with VIVO™, Specializing with VITRO™
To replace these improvised setups, LifeEngine has developed dedicated perfusion systems designed around the actual operational realities of bioskills labs. Within this foundation, VIVO™ and VITRO™ serve complementary roles, together supporting both comprehensive simulation programs and more targeted perfusion applications.
Engineered as a comprehensive whole-body perfusion system, VIVO™ is designed specifically for high-fidelity surgical training. It delivers stable, physiological pulsatile flow while also addressing the inherent complexity of whole-body perfusion. More than a simple pump, VIVO™ functions as an active fluid-management hub:
- Motorized filling and draining.
- Integrated aspiration with filtered fluid recycling during simulation.
- Automated heating to maintain physiological temperature.
By combining these functions into a single platform, it becomes the primary engine driving repeatable, standardized simulation programs.
VITRO™ is designed for applications that require a focused and highly controlled perfusion environment. Built for precision and versatility, it powers isolated models used in targeted applications where granular control over hemodynamic parameters is essential, ranging from TAVI procedures in cardiac models to advanced neurosurgical skull-base workshops in 3D-printed sinus models. By delivering precise, reproducible flow conditions in a compact format, VITRO™ extends the LifeEngine ecosystem to specialized applications without the complexity of deploying a whole-body setup.

The LifeEngine Ecosystem: Cadaveric perfusion made easy
Each component of the LifeEngine ecosystem was developed to address a specific friction point, helping teams focus less on operating the model and more on delivering high-quality training:
Supporting longer, higher-quality simulations with endoflo™
To solve tissue swelling, endoflo™ was engineered as a proprietary perfusion solution that mimics blood viscosity and limits extravasation. This maintains intravascular flow and enables longer, highly stable simulations without the bloating associated with saline. It is also non-toxic, shelf stable, easy to clean and more cost-effective than utilizing real blood.
Keeping a clean, efficient workspace with inVISIO™
The inVISIO™ radiolucent perfusion table directly addresses the “mess” of traditional setups. It features a dual-layer base where spills and leaks flow naturally into a drainage basin, preventing pooling. Because it offers full-length radiolucency, it enables clean, imaging-compatible procedures without restricting the surgical workflow.
Guided operation with LifeEngine Control™
The VIVO™ and VITRO™ are operated through the LifeEngine Control™ app, pre-installed on an included tablet. It enables flow monitoring and allows the user to tune the hemodynamic parameters. It also provides step-by-step guided workflows for setup, perfusion, and semi-automated cleaning, empowering internal staff to run complex simulations with greater confidence and consistency.
Simplifying setup with modular perfusion kits
Our modular perfusion kits are designed to streamline setup and improve repeatability from one session to the next. With color-coded identifiers and quick-disconnect fittings, these robust semi-consumables make setup more intuitive and support efficent turnover between procedures. Designed for repeated use across approximately 20 simulations, they also help lower operational burden over time.

From complex setup to institutional capability
When perfused simulation becomes easier to operate and repeat, it becomes far more than a technical demonstration. By addressing the major friction points of perfusion, from fluid control and model quality to workflow guidance and setup efficiency, centers can deliver high-quality surgical training and expand their offering to a broader range of clinical and industry partners.
In reducing the operational burden that has traditionally limited perfusion, LifeEngine helps transform a complex setup into a scalable and valuable part of a center’s simulation infrastructure.
